Copie Conforme – A Movie by Abbas Kiarostami

Certified CopyCopie Conforme (Certified Copy) directed by Abbas Kiarostami is such a delightful watch for me many reasons. The reason I decided to watch is for two main reasons. One of it is that the lead lady character is played by one of my most favorite actresses Juliette Binoche who is always a treat to watch. Remember her acting opposite Johnny Depp in Cocolat.

Second it is from one of my favorite iranian film maker and director Abbas Kiassotami who had also made movies like ‘Men at work’ and ‘The Deserted station’ and many more.

When I finished watching there were so many more reasons for me to look at this movie as a great piece of art and movie making. The movie is about an english author who comes to Tuscany to talk about his book titled “Certified Copy” which argues the point that every copy of an art form is an original in its own form and even the original is just a copy of something else.

There in he meets this French Antique dealer played by Juliette Binoche and the movie goes forward through their discussions as they drive through the country side and drink coffee and wine.

Now when the movies starts you get the impression that it is about love and attraction. A kind of subtle attraction that lives in all of us as it intertwines itself in the maze of relationships we build.

But then the complexity of relationships breaks open and the movie takes a sudden turn and the relationship between the main characters become diluted. They start talking like husband and wife and about the validity of being together and in a relationship. The conversation language also becomes a mix of French, Italian and English.

The charm is that finally it leaves the viewer with no clear answer if the main characters are really related as husband and wife or just two people who meet up. The beauty is that Abbas was able to take the viewer on a smooth country side drive and then give him a jolt out of blue and leave him to himself without a GPS to ride back home.

A must watch for movie lovers:)
