House of Cards – A Netflix original

House of CardsFinally finished watching 13 episodes of the Netflix original series “House of Cards” starring one of my favorite actors of all time Kevin Spacey… The entire series takes quite some time to finish and for a person like me not used to following TV serials it was a new experience and a bit daunting… but it had an interesting flow and I loved it….

Netflix had released all the 13 episodes in one shot on Feb 1st which kind of deviates from the usual viewing experience for TV series…. when one episode ends and you go to bed and wait thinking how the story will unfold in the next episode… at least I guess that is how people who regularly watch TV series as piece meals would see it… But here you have the next episode in the click of a button…

That being said it was not much different in the Netflix world because I guess you always had the whole season series of popular shows in one shot available to you… What was interesting is that this is an original series… not available anywhere else…. Netflix also claims this is the most watched series by viewers on Netflix

Now the interesting shift this brings is that a distributer/platform starts producing…. which might just be a new online trend that we might see…. I am still not sure about the profitability part of such an investment panning out in terms of viewer ship and increased revenue…. but as more and more people move to internet than TV for their viewing needs… this looks like a good move….. it might even be a good marketing move in the long run….

Also the series at the end of the 13 episodes leaves the viewer with many ways of how the story would evolve…. And I would not be surprised if we see a new episode of the series coming available on a pay per view model….

That being said the question is will Netflix start making movies in partnership with others to have more Netflix only releases…. this could be a test run… you never know…. but the idea of having an original series or movie only available on Netflix seems like a nice idea if it clicks…
