He came early that day. Unlike a normal day he decided to cook. He scanned the fridge and found there were spring onions and nothing else. He asked himself if he needed to go and buy something. He decided not.
He took one spring onion and looked at it and smiled.
“I wonder what you are thinking now. Are you happy to get out of the cold fridge? How about some hot boiling water to feel even better”
He laughed and started chopping all of them.
As he did it he also kept a pot of water to boil. He opened the cupboard and he could see some curry powder. He opened the freezer and he saw some shrimp. He opened the fridge again and there was some leftover rice from the restaurant the previous day.
By then the water was boiling. He put the rice and shrimp and the chopped spring onions and then two spoons of curry powder. He looked for salt and there was none. He remembered that it had gotten over. He walked over to the table and there was table salt there. Just a bit but he will have to do with it. He made a mental note for salt and later typed it on his phone. Like every other day he had decided to buy one extra salt so he never runs out of it. He knew he would always forget. He did it again.
His soup or makeshift soup or whatever you want to call it was now done. He sat alone at his dining table and started savoring it. It was not bad. It had a flavor blend with the onion taste and the shrimps did not give him any trouble. It all went smooth for a meagre meal. He wished he had some bread. He had tossed it away that morning as it had all turned green.
He slept early that day.
Sometime at night he heard a knock. He looked at his watch. It is 3:17AM. Who can that be? He walks over to the door and looks into the door camera. A face he did not recognize stood outside.
What should he do? Maybe the man needs help. Maybe there is something sinister in him. It was a total stranger. Should he just keep quiet? He decided not.
He buzzed and asked who it was. The man said “You’re the last one who can fix this.” He raised a broken toy. He was taken aback. He took a few steps back and stepped on something and fell on his back.
In the morning he found himself in his bed. He remembered the incident and he ran to the door and opened it. There was no one there. But the toy was lying on the steps. He picked up the toy and looked at it. It was the same toy he had thrown as a kid.
Once it broke he could never fix it. He tried a lot and then finally gave up. He went to his mom and sisters and they did not have the time for him. He then went to his dad and said “You’re the last one who can fix this”
His dad was extremely stressed that day with work and he did not even look at him. He again said “You’re the last one who can fix this.” His dad got fed up and finally took the toy and threw it away.
His dad looked at him and said “I can fix it for you, but I won’t do it because you are not the last person who can fix this, you are the only person who can fix anything. He sat on the door step holding the toy and tried to recollect the face of the stranger. Slowly it became evident. The stranger now looked exactly like him.
“You are the only person who can fix anything,
you are the only person who can fix anything…..”
he kept repeating… yes it was just him…
