Corruption – Is it inside or outside us?

An enthusiastic entrepreneur or business man who has to bribe the officials in order to oil his engine that creates the economic surplus. He is an integral contributor to the growing economy, and creates new jobs and prosperity. If given a platform to perform without corruption, will he start looking at profits differently, how can the society ensure that he will not act greedy and promote corruption in another way? Is there a change he can make individually to mitigate this, if so can that individual change happen now, before he gets an uncorrupted platform to perform?

When an honest and enthusiastic young new entrant to public service like law enforcement or other active Government roles is forced to join or sucked into the web of corruption as the benefactor, should he resist and fight it out or be part of the system? Who among the society will support his fight if he becomes jobless, wrongly accused or ends up on the streets? Is his fight the society’s fight?

Sometimes it is more important to ask the questions than finding answers.

The Multinational companies which establish presence in developing nations for both cost and profit factor entice the respective governments to change existing rules. Apparently there is a burgeoning number of emerging consultants who help them in getting through the ways of the land just like how the Auto rikshas cut the lanes and take you to the destination often missing a few red lights and taking wrong turns on one way roads. All for getting you to where you want, reducing cost and improving profits. Is anything wrong in this? Isn’t this a way to capitalize on opportunities in a current market condition? Does personal integrity and outlook have to do anything with the contribution of these entities to the corruption in a system?

A remote village that houses one ‘rich beyond proportion’ family (the traditional landlord systems powered by twisted historical accounts of human existence) that rules a huge population of people whom you can’t even see when you stand on the defined poverty line and look down. Between these both sects is the playing ground of people who connect these less fortunate worlds with the emerging business hubs and try to uncover riches from both sides. The majority population always waits and often wonders what is happening for he believes that the god of the state (politician) is the final arbitrator to their miseries and yet nothing changes except the faces of these visible Gods and most often the words they give. Will individual changes in people bring out a bigger change to the nature of corruption in here? Can people discard their historical relevance and take the hands of the less fortunate and march towards prosperity by starting schools, educating, providing opportunities and medical care? Is that a possibility that can happen from oneself and happen before corruption is removed?

The common man who keeps jumping out of the honesty bus every times he wants to pee in someone else’s garden often does things without knowing how the action affects the society. In my last trip to India I saw a lot of bridges with tolls. Every driver was angry for paying a Toll for they think it should be free. They don’t think that there is something like a maintenance cost to the bridge. Again the people who collect the toll I guess also have some way of recycling/reusing the toll ticket, obviously not for green earth purposes. Is it wrong if you have to pay for using bridges? When can you pay without feeling bad and when will one collect with dignity? Can this happen from a change in the self?

The Government is for the citizens of the nation and just like any other system, it needs an income in order to expend

You would have seen the Tax advisors and tax consultants who tell people publically that they can find loopholes in the Tax codes that will save you money and many honest responsible citizens use them. In another way, is it not the responsibility to close every loophole that reduces money coming to the treasury of your country? Or are we ok saying it is not our duty to fix it, so we will use it as long as it is there? What is our responsibility as a citizen to ensure that proper taxes are paid, Can everyone start paying it without bothering who is not doing it or trying to trace its passage through hands?

A doctor who is very skilled and saves thousands of lives every year also has this arrangement with the nearby lab so he orders additional tests to find more in depth analysis of a patient’s situation. You cannot blame him for more detailed analysis is always good right? Or should you be concerned? Is the personal arrangement with the lab for cuts a question on the integrity or is he following the norm?

The sales man who does an honest job of selling his company’s products telling they are the best in the market and then changes the job and sells another product saying they are the best in the world. Is this a realization on his or her part, an unavoidable professional dictate or questionable integrity?

How thin can the line between two sides be and how can we humanly see the difference?

The religious leader who takes advantage of man’s constant fear of the unknown and his belief systems and keeps political ambitions and even interprets scriptures the way he wants so he can prove his point. Is the leader wrong or is it the follower who is ready to go behind every person who proclaims to be divine?
