Was the new Agneepath Unnecessary? May be Not

AgneepathThis was my first take on the movie and my review was going to be the shortest “Agneepath was an unnecessary film”. The main reason being that you really don’t have to try and get your hand dirty on remakes just because it is a trend. But then when I thought the movie is not at all tragic like the fiasco ‘Aag’ from RamGopal Varma which still holds the top rank and is a model for film makers to know what should not be ever attempted. If the theme and timing is so bad, no big names can salvage a project.

But was a new Agneepath really necessary?. I guess not, at least not in the form it got released. But It is tough to write an utterly negative comment about the film and that is because of the negative characters in the movie. Sanjay Dutt’s role as Kancha and Rishi Kapoor’s Negative role as Rauf Lala were not only unique, but very well conceived and of course done by the actors. Even Priyanka Chopra looked comfortable with the role for a change (though a short one).

Now the whole problem I had is with the Protagonist of the story Vijay Deenanath Chauhan. Hrithik, is a good actor but I really feel sorry for him for having to do the movie. Vijay of the new Agneepath looked more like an emotional guy with a lot of pent up anger and revenge inside but never really showing its full self outside. Quite different from Big B’s role that did not have any trace of being emotional. Big B in the original Agneepath was a man whose heart had frozen to emotions and only pumping at the thought of revenge. The fury was evident in every dialogue. Here Hrithik is forced into many scenes that shows a lighter side with tears and weakness.

The movie went dragging on several occasions and i would blame it on the lighter version of Vijay Deenanath Chauhan. Some changes in the movie is that they had removed and added two core characters from the old movie. Like Mithun Da’s South Indian Character is not there in this movie and if I am correct Rishi Kapoor’s Rauf Lala was a refreshing addition from the old Agneepath. That being the case they could have made one more change. They could have easily done without the scenes where the villain holds the Hero’s mom and sister captive to settle scores with the Hero. That looked so old fashioned, unwanted and boring.

Another big drawback in one way was the negative role of Sanjay Dutt’s Kancha because it towered all over Hrithik’s Hero image.Definitely not Hrithik’s fault but it becomes a very big set back for the remake of the Agneepath when the villain becomes more colorful than the Hero. Especially when the original Agneepath was an out and out Bachchan movie where no one stood close in screen presence. Sanjay Dutt performing so well I guess finally looked like a slight limp for the movie.

So not really unnecessary as it gave us Rauf Lala and Kancha. But in no way was this a Vijay Deenanad Chauhan movie (again not Hrithik’s fault as he gave a good performance) it was an out and out Kancha and Rauf Lala Movie.
