Don’t be duped by the star in the movie…. This was probably a mistake Ben Kingsley made…No idea why Neeraj Pandey allowed Chandran Rutnam to make such a movie on his original story…. And this is probably the first time I am writing a review for a movie after unable to see it beyond 20 minutes…
When I read about the movie….. the first thing that came to mind is how come no one came to know about this…. a remake of “A Wednesday” and Ben Kingsley in Naseer’s role…. I would have had some other choices… but Ben was quite good as a common man….
I checked if the movie is for streaming on Netflix or on Redbox… Could not find it…. but found it on Amazon… 4 bucks and can be bought on prime…. It was a 2013 movie and only 4 bucks… did raise some doubt but 4 bucks can be justified for the remake of Wednesday played by Ben Kingsley… So I burned it on my card…. and eagerly waited for it…
It arrived on Friday and we sat down to watch it today… 20 minutes into it we almost fainted…. not sure how you could remake something so poorly…. The movie was such an amateurish attempt at a movie and except Ben no one really knew how to act…. All the while I kept wondering what got into Neeraj Pandey to agree that his original story be used like this…
Now what is the problem with the movie… sorry I can only review based on the 20 minutes I saw…. but that painstaking 20 minutes did tell me a couple of things…. and here are the same…
A remake of “A Wednesday” in a Sri Lankan setting was the first error…. they could have very well made it in an LA or NY or London setting instead…..
Another issue is that “the man” The role of Ben (or Naseeruddin in Wednesday) is not the only important character in the movie… The role of the DIG (Anupam Kher in Wednesday) is an equally important character…. I have no clue who acted in that role but he seemed so much an amatuer actor… and he was a white guy.. did not know Sri Lanka had white senior police officers..
Now “A Wednesday” is not a movie that could not have been remade well… I would have hoped to see Al pacino and Robert De Niro do either of the roles… Some might think that is too much to ask for…. But Neeraj Pandey should be happy because he told us a story that we think in hollywood should be paid by the best of hollywood….
Honestly I always hoped there would be a remake of the movie in that proportions…. but now I guess that wait is over…. I need to watch “A Wednesday” once more to remove the pain of “A Common Man”
