Varghese Kurien, the Milkman of India is no more..the founder chairman of India’s National Dairy Development Board and also best known for the Amul brand of products dies at 90…Hailing from Kerala….I salute his efforts in public service….
He was the first Social Entrepreneur I ever heard of….At a time when social entrepreneurship is widely pursued….there is lot one can learn from Kurien and his efforts in rural Indian dairy corporative development
I grew up hearing about him at many instances as my dad used to consider him in very high regards…maybe that is why whenever I ate Amul I use to remember him as well…I also later learned that Kurien was born in calicut…my hometown…Kozhikode….
Then when the Shyam Benegal movie ‘Manthan’ came out the role of Girish Karnard which was loosely based on the life of Kurien…I remember by dad saying….this is a man with a purpose and who is determined to work for the greater good….The movie was probably based on Kurien’s deputation to Anand early in his career where he built the dairy corporative model into a leading institution in India.
Another Indian icon moves on……
