Paying with Life #69 of 365 Poems

I filled a mouth full of coins
though the price of each word was not fully negotiated
I did not know what it would get me
may be a poem of the darkest hours of man’s futile attempts to dream
may be the finest moments of a short story
it could be a long cold chapter in a chilling mystery
but I had no interest for a mouthful
all I wanted was
a penny worth of truth
is that too much to ask?
well they said yes.
they said truth and lies are both expensive
lies you can still buy if you can afford
but truth, you have to pay with your life
and you just have one
so no points for choosing which one you want to use
the bullet is on its way
near
here
now
