Bacha Bazi – Innocence Exploited and Abandoned

I first came to know about this illegal, horrid and absolutely criminal practice when it was mentioned in Khalid Hossieni’s “The Kite Runner” where Amir returns to Afghanistan to find his friend Hassan’s son sold and kept captive to feed the pervert imaginations of Afghan warlords in the Taliban regime. My initial thought was that this was just a one kind of incident and might … Continue reading Bacha Bazi – Innocence Exploited and Abandoned

The God helmet

Recently I was watching the wormhole with Morgan freeman in the science channel. The topic was “Is there a Creator?” While all the people and theories presented were fascinating I was particularly hooked on to one person and his one invention Dr. Michael Persinger and his God Helmet The God helmet as seen in this image is a helmet based apparatus, placed on the head … Continue reading The God helmet

FarmVille for Prisoners

I read an article today exploring if video games are helping lowering crime rates.

While the recession, smarter police and more people behind the bars is what many say the reason for the reduced crime rate

Lawrence Katz, a labor economist has another interesting view. He suspects that video games and Web sites may have kept the young and idle busy during this recession, thus explaining the surprising lack of an uptick in crime.

While this might be true, I was a bit uncomfortable at this observation. While giving people a reason to do things other than crime is valid playing video games as a reason might have some other drastic impacts.

Sir Ken’s Followup talk at TED

I had written about Sir Ken’s first talk in TED earlier and today I had a chance to hear him again. The last talk did change me in the way I looked at what my kids wanted and as a result my daughter whom we were pushing for violin classes, given a choice stopped it and enrolled in Gymnastics.

Now the result is that I don’t have to remember the dates of the classes, nor do I have to ask her to practice. She notes the dates, and makes sure to get my keys in time to driver her to the Gymnastics lessons. Now we have a much happier young lady at home.

Why do People Cheat?

Well why do they?

The easiest answer and the most common reason we are taught is they are bad or that bad people cheat. As a kid you learn this, you know it is bad and yet you grow up to having done this some time in our life.

Many would claim no to this while some might not really have, so you can take the benefit of doubt and head out of the door, you are either too pious for me or an absolute pig, either way we don’t go well.

Walking on Coal for Self Confidence – Murdering Childhoods

I am saddened at hearing the news of kids being made to walk bare footed on burning coal. An incident reported in Indian Express today that seemed to have happened in a private school in Surat, India as an effort to build self confidence. The said school they say is Riverdale Academy in Surat. I tried googling them, but could not see a website.

The news came up in the indian express today and can be read here.

If this is true, it was even sad to know that the parents witnessed the ninety minutes ordeal that left kids crying with pain.

When will this end?

When will parents learn that kids have rights too. When will they understand that kids are not tools to live their own unlived life. When will the parents know that the kid needs hugs and not a ton of homework and after school activities to kill his or her childhood. When will these lesser life forms learn that its ok to be second. When will they realize that you cant recreate your image in your child. When will they accept that their inability to achieve their dreams is not a reason to sabotage the dreams of their kids

Let them Play

Let them play to the tunes of their heart for some more time so that their heart gets stronger as they grow.

Let they be childish for some more time for that will make them stronger in life.

Let them see life through their own eyes and not be blinded by their parents short vision.

Let them grow at their own pace, the world will wait for it needs more happy folks.

Let them learn what they want to learn for they will excel only in what they like.

Tharoor Resigns! Now What…?

“If you throw the past through the door, it will come back chasing you through the windows.”

It is quite unfortunate for me to write this post after my last post It’s so Tharooristic where I still held on to my hopes that the whole tiff would get over like any other controversy that Shashi was involved in. But I guess I was wrong.

Now where does that put me. As I said in my last post if this controversy turns out to be true it would suck, so bottom line of what I feel is It sucks. But then I also mentioned that if it were true I would take it as yet another victory of democracy and will look forward for more refinement in the political scene.

But why is Shashi’s position different?

I was wondering what would be the reasons for Shashi’s position to be much different from other politicians who have resigned before.

Shashi’s following is to a large extent non political and that will make a big difference as an ousted minister. This could be a good and bad thing based on which route he wishes to take after this debacle.

Shashi did not have a previous political role before contesting the election and that puts him in a tight spot for two reasons. Firstly If he has to continue working his way in politics he has to do so with the grass route level political engine, it might be a tough thing for him for his supporters are not really other political aspirers.
